12,000 BTU Mini Split Wire & Breaker Size Calculator
The tool below is pre-configured for a standard 12,000 BTU (1-Ton) 208/230V system (typically 9A MCA / 15A MOP). Adjust distance to test voltage drop or select 115V configurations.

1. The 115V vs. 230V Sizing Breakdown
Manufacturers (including Senville, Pioneer, and MrCool) produce 12,000 BTU systems in two distinct electrical configurations:
- 115V Single-Phase: Draws higher continuous amperage (~12A to 16A MCA). This configuration requires a dedicated 20-Amp single-pole breaker and 12 AWG copper wire.
- 208/230V Single-Phase: Operates at higher efficiency and lower continuous current (~8A to 10A MCA). This unit requires a 15-Amp double-pole breaker and 14 AWG copper wire under standard 50-foot runs.
2. 12k BTU Wire Gauge by Run Length (Voltage Drop Table)
Calculated under NEC 210.19(A) to ensure line loss remains strictly under the 3.0% threshold (3.45V on 115V; 6.90V on 230V):
| Conduit Run Distance | 115V Unit (16A MCA) | 230V Unit (9A MCA) | Code Compliance Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| 35 Feet | 12 AWG Copper (1.92% drop) | 14 AWG Copper (0.86% drop) | Optimal for both voltage ratings |
| 50 Feet (Standard) | 12 AWG Copper (2.75% drop) | 14 AWG Copper (1.23% drop) | 12 AWG approaches 3% on 115V |
| 75 Feet | 10 AWG Copper (Auto-Upsized) | 14 AWG Copper (1.84% drop) | 115V upsizes at 55 ft; 230V remains 14 AWG |
| 125+ Feet | 8 AWG Copper (Auto-Upsized) | 12 AWG Copper (Auto-Upsized) | 230V reaches 3% at 122 ft; upsizes to 12 AWG |
3. Popular 12,000 BTU Brand Nameplate Benchmarks
Electrical nameplate ratings direct from manufacturer technical submittal documentation:
| Brand & Model | Voltage / Phase | MCA Rating | Max Breaker (MOP) | Standard Conductor |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| MrCool DIY 4th Gen 12k | 115V / Single-Phase | 16.0A | 20A HACR | 12 AWG (UF-B / THHN) |
| Senville LETO 12k | 208/230V / Single-Phase | 9.0A | 15A Double-Pole | 14 AWG Copper |
| Pioneer WYS Series 12k | 115V / Single-Phase | 15.0A | 20A Single-Pole | 12 AWG Copper |
| Mitsubishi Electric GL12NA | 208/230V / Single-Phase | 9.3A | 15A Double-Pole | 14 AWG Copper |
4. Does a 12k BTU Mini Split Need a Neutral Wire?
If your 12,000 BTU unit is 230V, no neutral wire is required. Connect only Line 1, Line 2, and Equipment Ground. A standard 14/2 or 12/2 UF-B or THHN/THWN copper cable satisfies code requirements. 115V units do require a neutral wire.
