⚡ Code Rule: 208/230V mini-splits do not use a neutral wire. Supply circuit consists solely of Line 1, Line 2, and Ground.

1. Wire Gauge & The 30-Amp Disconnect Rating

Because most 2-ton outdoor compressors have an MCA between 18A and 22A, 10 AWG copper wire is standard practice to satisfy continuous current needs (NEC 440.6) and coordinate with a 30A double-pole breaker:

  • If your 24,000 BTU unit specifies a 30A MOP, a standard 30-Amp non-fused disconnect satisfies code.
  • If your unit specifies a 35A or 40A MOP (common on multi-zone 2-ton models), you must install a 60-Amp non-fused disconnect switch. Installing a 30A disconnect on a 35A circuit fails municipal inspection.
